This BlackRiver Charters excursion is designed to be as safe and respectful to the dolphins and their natural habitat as possible. Whether you stay in the speedboat, or jump in the water to snorkel around the dolphins, you can do so with the peace of mind of knowing that our team is trained to ensure that the dolphins are not disturbed or harmed in any way.

Our Visit the Dolphins excursion can be experienced from the comfort of our speedboat or out in the water with snorkelling equipment. However, dolphins are wild animals and there is no guarantee that they will interact with you. However, you will be able to view them from afar and see them gracefully slice through the water.

Dolphins are incredibly playful animals and often exhibit playful behavior when interacting with swimmers. You may see them leaping out of the water, performing acrobatic flips, or riding the waves created by boats. Their playful nature makes swimming with dolphins a truly exhilarating experience.

It is important to respect these wild animals and their natural behaviour. Our experienced skippers will provide you with all necessary safety instructions to make sure you are always safe and respectful of the dolphins at all times. Never try to feed or touch the dolphins.

While we cannot guarantee dolphin sightings, our experienced guides will take you to the best spots where dolphins are known to frequent. Mauritius is home to both spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, and sightings are common throughout the year.

The best time to see dolphins in Mauritius is all year round.

The waters of the west coast are home to spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. Spinner dolphins, renowned for their acrobatic displays are often seen leaping and spinning through the air and are always a crowd favourite on our BlackRiver Charters tours. Much smaller than their bottlenose cousins, you’ll recognise spinner dolphins by their unique colouring which includes a dark grey back, white or light grey sides and a distinctive three-part colour pattern on their flanks.

Bottlenose dolphins, on the other hand, are larger and more robust, with a characteristic short stubby beak. They are known for their friendly and sociable nature, often approaching boats and swimmers. Highly intelligent, bottlenose dolphins use complex vocalisations and body language to communicate with each other, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of this unique language while on a snorkelling session.

Whales are migratory animals and two of the most majestic of the species, sperm whales and humpback whales, are a common enough site in Mauritian waters.

Our BlackRiver Charters crew have years of experience in whale spotting and taking our guests to the best spots to see these magnificent creatures. Nature has its own agenda though and seeing a whale on our whale watching cruise is never a guarantee.

In addition to whales, you may also spot dolphins and the occasional sea turtle during our whale watching experience.

Safety is our top priority. If weather conditions are unfavourable, we may need to reschedule or cancel the trip. We will do our best to provide advance notice and arrange an alternative date for your tour.

Stepping foot on the islet isn’t allowed, as it’s a protected nature reserve, but tourists come here to gaze at the rust-orange cliffs from the water, surrounded by seabirds and the iconic “Paille-en-queue”. Coin de Mire is also known for its amazing snorkelling opportunities with some of the reef’s most curious creatures, from damselfish to moray eels; and at times, a turtle or passing pod of dolphins.
